Buckle up!
Many wheelchair users rely heavily on public transit, and researchers are working hard to make buses and subways a safer travel option. At the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Wheelchair Transportation, a lab located just a few miles from campus, a researcher analyzes a patent-pending mechanism for fastening seatbelts developed by School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) faculty and students. Their goal is to create a safer, more easily manipulated seat belt system.
Improvements such as these translate into vastly increased mobility for wheelchair users. These efforts complement other efforts within the SHRS—efforts that foster independence and help all people reach their full potential.
