A Machine Shop for Real Scientists Helping Real People

Researchers at the Human Engineering Research Lab focus on analyzing and improving wheelchair design—but creating that design is only part of the process. The next step is to build, so researchers can move beyond theory and actually test their designs.

The Human Engineering Research Lab’s in-house machine shop provides that service— turning ideas for wheelchair design into reality.

Located in one of Pittsburgh’s VA hospital complexes, the Human Engineering Research Laboratory is another setting where students gain valuable, real-world work experience, often working alongside the same professionals they will encounter upon entering the workforce. Internships and research experience at Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences translate into improved job prospects upon finishing a degree.
