Biographical Profile

Ellen R. Cohn PhD CCC- SLP is Associate Dean for Instructional Development at the University of Pittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders, where she was past Director of the University of Pittsburgh Speech and Hearing Clinic.

Previously, she served as a speech-language pathologist and Research Associate at the University of Pittsburgh Cleft-Palate Craniofacial Clinic. She currently teaches in the areas of cleft palate and craniofacial disorders, pharmacy and therapeutics, orthodontics, telecommunication, rhetoric and communication, and instructional development and technology. She has authored multiple distance education manuals, and co-authored, with radiologist M. Leon Skolnick MD, Videofluroscopic Studies of Speech in Patients with Cleft Palate, published by Springer-Verlag. Cohn is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, and has contributed to Educause Quarterly: the IT Practitioners Journal, Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Journal of Speech-Language and Hearing Disorders, and Radiology. Prior communications consultant activities have included: Allied Signal, Equitable Gas, and the U.S. Bureau of Mine Safety.

Cohn serves as a co-investigator for a Department of Education Application to a National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research for a Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Telerehabilitation development project: “Development and Implementation of a Teleassessment Architecture for the Promotion of Communication Function in Children with Disabilities.” She serves on the American Telemedicine Association's SIG on Telerehabilitation's Executive Committee.

Recently, she co-authored two programs at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law: a Certificate Program in Disability Law, and, the first MSL with a Concentration in Disability Law.
Cohn is a graduate of Douglass College of Rutgers University (BA 1974), Vanderbilt University (MS 1975), and the University of Pittsburgh (PhD 1980).
